I have been hatching a few early season chicks this week with our apprentices. So I thought I would make a couple of suggestions that you may find useful yourself. Usually you would provide the chicks with artificial heat, the consequence on occasions can be a dehydrated bird! Chicks are surprisingly lazy at times, they actually forget to fend for themselves. So where practically possible put several little bowls of water in their accommodation, this will reduce any chance of dehydration. As for food, use an old large egg tray to scatter chick crumbs on. They are a nice height for the chick to climb onto, the wells hold the crumb and the tray simply keeps them busy exploring,” a good thing I say”!
