Well, we are a couple of months into the feed trial. It is incredible, the behaviour differences between the two groups. For those of you who are not up to speed with my trial – two groups of pigs born on the same day, group 1 are being fed PM and group 2 are being fed AM. My thinking behind this strategy was that the typical AM fed pigs are spending too much time relying on the feed we give them. Resulting in lazy pigs. So I thought to myself, if I changed the feeding to PM, the pigs would be far more active during the day foraging about as pigs should.
At the moment there is a startling difference between the two groups in growth rates. The PM fed group are steaming ahead of the AM group. I think this is due to the pigs going to sleep straight after feeding. This enables the pig to digest and absorb the nutrition. Resulting in the pig growing more efficiently. The only way to confirm this theory, is to wait and see what the pigs weigh when killing day arrives, and calculate the daily weight game and feed conversion ratio.
