UK pig production is about to face it’s hardest time ever. As it stands, every pig is produced at a loss of around £18 With the global cereal harvest looking poor, feed costs will rise. So it’s only going to get worse.
Cheaply produced imported pork, is crippling the UK market. Sub standard production methods are undercutting ethical UK pork prices. It seems most supermarkets are happy to stock these imports. I accept that they are in business to make every penny they can. But, surely not to the detriment of our very own farmers! Supermarkets really do need to challenged on their actions and ethics…
If ALDI can pledge to only stock %100 British meat in their counters, then so can others.
I wish a system could be put in place to ensure that imported pork can only be permitted once full absorption of UK pork has been achieved. “Pigs might fly”
Consumers are now starting to genuinely focus on how food is produced, and most importantly, it’s effect on society. I can’t help but feel their is sooner or later going to be a back lash on the supermarkets. Society is starting to revert back to the smaller High St shops. Grocers and family butchers are reporting an increase in support. Family values are taking precedent again, and with it, tradition…
