My apologies for the delayed post. I have been particularly busy with the new arrival of my stunning new baby daughter!!! Maisey May Finkle… and born on her due date. Only 2% of the population are born on the due date.
Blimey hasn’t it been dry recently, worryingly the grass hasn’t really been growing. This will result in short supplies of hay and silage for the winter months. Perhaps you should consider forward buying now. I can assure you that come 2012 feed prices will rocket. With this in mind, I would give your stocking density some serious thought. The last thing you need this winter is feed bills spiralling out of control. Take a close look at your animals, is there anything that needs culling???
You may remember that I had a feed trial on the go with our pigs at Jimmy’s Farm. I decided to see what the effect of only PM feeding would have on the carcass. Without going into too much detail, they did grow very quickly, but the were way too fatty. Interestingly at the age of 26 weeks the fat started to develop at a rapid rate. This highlights that you really need to get the weaners off to a flying start…
Hopefully your veg is now well on the way. This month I would be making sure that, sweet corn, pumpkins and squashes are in and settled. Keep a close eye on your runner beans, the showers that are expected could cause a surge in Black and Green Fly, not ideal.
I am delighted to announce that Ritchie Livestock Handling Systems are now a sponsor of our Master Classes at Jimmy’s Farm. Very soon an incredible handling system is to be erected. Cant wait…
